These are actually two tracks I made, then mixed them in a chaotic fashion and deliberate mistimed it on a few spots. I made two mixes and both mixes I put in Audacity, pasted together after each other till I had a long enough track. Then started to play with all the effects I could find and took them random over the track, not at the usual beats but with a random start and finish of the effect. the result is a monotome beat in a complete chaos, creating something easy to understand but at the same time highly unusual.

I started DJ-ing in the mid 90s at camping sites during the holidays cause I liked messing with equipment. That never really stopped, some call me a nerd in denial but I deny that of course. I was pretty much raised without any culture whatsoever, when I hit puberty I didn’t know anything else than the main pop hits. While searching I had periods of Pop, Hard Rock, Mellow House, Classical Music, Gabber and Hip Hop. When the 90s came to a close I became even more diverse and really started to combine just about anything.

I could never really identify with the fixation on DJ-ing in one particular style and was glad to see that this started to fade in the 00s. When I started working in the audiovisual industry and later television and film I learned even more about music and sound in general. It’s Quentin Tarantino’s use of music as a character in his films that inspired me to really dig into music history and lyrics. That has lead me to be Soundtrack Adviser on a few small documentary and film projects and the aspiration to expand this in the future.

If I absolutely have to describe my style as a DJ in a word I would say Eclectic, because that means playing just about anything. But if I have to use a term that’s more ‘understood’ I would say Electro, which will piss off many, which I enjoy so fine. My performances usually have a base of Electro, House, Techno, Breakbeat, Trance, Big Beat, Synth-Pop and Acid. I use many modern songs both popular and obscure and combine this with the old stuff and often remixes off it. You may at times recognize Bob Marley, The Beatles, Elvis, The Doors, Iggy Pop, Johnny Cash or Nina Simone, just to name a few classics. There are also often unexpected inserts of Jazz, Soul, Latin or Rock. The bottom line is that it must shake your ass. People like summaries of influences so here a few in random order: The Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, Moloko, Moby, The Prodigy, Daft Punk, Justice, Groove Armada, Adam Freeland, Mr. Oizo, Jamie Lidell, Simian Mobile Disco, Basement Jaxx, Faithless, Masters At Work, Jamiroquai and Soulwax. So basically I prefer artists that do different things, give awesome performances and are extremely unique.

After reading this all I hope you now understand why my motto is: “Mixing the soul of the music,” and I call my performances X’d Up!

Nederlandse Bas Bijleveld beter bekend als DJ Axefield gebruikt Twitter voor uniek experiment

Het eerste dubbelinterview op twitter zal plaatsvinden op vrijdag avond 9 april om 21:00. Op zondag 28 maart 2010 om tien uur in de avond werd het eerste Twitter interview ter wereld gehouden. Dit werd gedaan door de Nederlandse DJ en filmmaker Bas Bijleveld (@BasBijleveld) beter bekend als DJ Axefield (@djaxefield). Het interview duurde twee uur lang.

Bas Bijleveld was de eerste ter wereld die een Twitter interview heeft gehouden. Dit keer interviewt hij zichzelf én PR-Agent/Artiest Jennifer Delano (@JenniferDelano.) Om het totaal te volgen is het mogelijk beiden te ‘followen’ op Twitter om vraag en antwoord te kunnen lezen.

Dit is niet de eerste keer dat Bas zijn creatieve kanten laat ziet op het gebied van Twitter. Eerder dit jaar introduceerde hij de zoekterm #FFNL als Nederlandse vervanging van de internationaal gebruikte #FF (Follow Friday red.) welke elke vrijdag gebruikt wordt om Twitter ‘users’ te promoten waarvan men vindt dat zij door iedereen gevolgd zouden moeten worden. Deze behoort nu tot een van de standaard tools van de Nederlandse Twitteraar.

Bas Bijleveld: experimenteert verder met de ‘Social Media Series’ genaamd ‘DJ 2.0′ welke rond eind april van start gaat. Het unieke aan dit project is de combinatie van entertainment en de samenwerkingen met adverteerders die via deze serie in veel nauwer contact staan met het publiek dan bij de oude media Verder experimenteert Bas op allerlei manieren als artiest met ondernemers-spirit met al het mooie dat internet te bieden heeft. In mei wordt hierover tevens een muziek hit gelanceerd in samenwerking met zangeres Jennifer Delano. Ook is hij producent en creative director van de Britse speelfilm British Partition welke in 2012 in première gaat.

@BasBijleveld Well, I’m not really sure of the year per say, but it was somewhere halfway the 90s… damn I sound old!

@djaxefield Halfway the 90s you say, 1,5 decade already, impressive. Rich yet?

@BasBijleveld Not really, have spend thousand of Guldens and Euros more than I’ve made I tell you!

@djaxefield Yeah, Guldens, remember them so well, young kids these days don’t even know what they are, guess we are getting old.. But enough with the depressing memories of currencies of good old times where we still had some form of identity left… Well, it’s in the line of my previous question, @ThisSaskia wants to know at which age you started getting interested in DJ-ing…

@basbijleveld Well, in the 90s I started playing with records but any serious desire to become a DJ, that started in my early twenties…

@djaxefield So, what records did you used to buy at first? Was there a specific genre?

@BasBijleveld My first stereo tower at the age of 13 had a record player on top and so I HAD to buy some records! Bought some stuff of a flee-market somewhere, don’t remember all but there was Bad Michael and his hot sister’s Rhythm Nation and some other stuff.

@djaxefield Hey, @RomanRobroek is asking how you motivate yourself to keep going!

@BasBijleveld Well for starters, it’s just damn fun! I have a vinyl addiction anyway, may just as well try to go pro. But there’s more to it. It’s a way out. See, I’m not very good in being an employee, so may as well be on my own, more satisfying and also I love doing it, so it makes sense to keep going on no matter what!

@djaxefield Well, that’s not really answering the question, it says why you want to but what keeps you going is the real thing, wanna go deep.

@BasBijleveld If you wanna go deep you need length there are some good churgeries for that shit these days!

@BasBijleveld Ok, ok, I believe in applying basic maths to life, the far majority are quitters, some months, some years… at one point after the majority has quit, I’m still up and running! I believe that success is primarily a matter of endurance.

@djaxefield Nice. So you had 1 record player and some 80s pop music, what happened next?

@BasBijleveld When my stepfather lost his job, accident,we had to rent out the top floor (my former room) one of the rentees (hot chick btw) when she left, she gave me a Technics record player! Than I mixed (without mixer) between the stereo tower and the other on amp.

@basbijleveld But to come back to your question, didn’t exactly continue with disco music… had a very angry puberty and don’t like guitars and since bouncers didn’t let me into normal clubs the only thing left where everybody was accepted where gabber parties.

@djaxefield No shit but gabber, wasn’t that something racist?

@BasBijleveld No it wasn’t, on the contrary, EVERYBODY was allowed in, they don’t care if you come without a hot chick or wear cheap clothes. It was a protest music, fast and rough, helped me get rid of my aggression. Funny thing, never saw a fight on those parties. While in ‘normal’ whenever I did get in I always saw aggression, hated that nonsense. Things started to change when I heard Osdorp Posse, first time I heard Hip Hop with actual content and it struck me deep! When I reached my twenties I calmed down and started listening and enjoying all kinds of music, the fire became manageable.

@djaxefield What fire? Why so angry?

@BasBijleveld Well, to start with school, teachers telling me lies and bullshit, next to that I always have been a misfit in society and I was also from the so called economic underclass already was a seriously messed up kid so altogether my blood was boiling.

@BasBijleveld First inspiration was a colleague Rene van Bemmel (not the house DJ but the Acid DJ from 030) just loved the style and parties! But more recently I really dig (DJ wise) Fatboy Slim, 2ManyDJs, Dr.Lektroluv and Simian Mobile Disco! But apart from DJs I am also inspired by the artists of which I turn records like The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, Moby, Moloko, Faithless, Cassius, Justice, Jamiroquai, Mr. Oizo, Underworld, Green Velvet, Felix Da Housecat and many more & Madonna.

Was al gewezen op het bestaan van Tweetdeck op die meeting en heb die dan ook gulzig op mijn PC geworpen, want; gratis. In plaats van heel braaf de gebruiksaanwijzing lezen leek het mij een goed plan om gewoon mijzelf door andere twitteraars te laten vertellen hoe het werkt door domme vragen te gaan stellen. Het werkte bijzonder goed en had het binnen korte tijd allemaal door.

Wat ik er als DJ uit gesleept heb dat Twitter?

Onder het kopje ‘promotie exchange’ ga ik een mix maken voor een dansschool en een hardloop club. Ik heb opgetreden in Theater de Flint in Amersfoort voor Haïti op uitnodiging van @KroosSara (komt nog een aparte blog over) en ben nu in gesprek met de worstel vereniging De Halter in Utrecht waar ik mogelijk in maart een toernooi afsluit tijdens het feest. Ik ga ook nog meewerken aan DSB The Movie, heb hele interessante mensen ontmoet als gevolg van Twitter gesprekken en krijg antwoord op heel veel vragen en verder is het ook gewoon leuk om te doen. Ik heb zo’n 500 meer website bezoekers gehad, 35 views op YouTube, 200 views op MobyPictures en 550 followers op Twitter.

@zomertje Heb zelf meer met social media waar ik net ingedoken bent, is denk ik een soort middenweg tussen mond-op-mond en traditionele reclame 12:52 PM Feb 4th

Wat ik in het bijzonder nog hierover wil vertellen is wat ik zoal aan #durftevragen heb gehad. Http:www.durftevragen.com is een organisatie die mensen helpt met hun vragen. Zij hanteren een heel interessant systeem wat heet; waardebepaling achteraf. Dit houdt in dat je achteraf zelf uitmaakt wat het je waard was die hulp van hun. Ikzelf heb inmiddels besloten om dit systeem uitgebreid te gaan testen. Dus als je een DJ zoekt dan weet je dat je na mijn optreden helemaal zelf bepaald hoeveel mijn optreden jou waard was en dat is het bedrag wat op de factuur komt. Super toch? Als je het niks vond kost het je dus ook niks, vind ik nou een boeiend systeem! Zij organiseren continu evenementen door het land, ik was er bij in #S2M oftewel Seets2Meet, binnenkort ook #s2m010!

Het mooiste nog is dat @ford en @Zappos positief reageerden op mijn ‘Twitter-flirten met grote bedrijven’ experiment. Beide bedrijven krijgen een heel mooi voorstel voorgeschoteld over hoe wij elkaar kunnen assisteren in onze zakelijke doelstellingen.
